What’s the Big Problem with PDF FDDs?

You might think: “But a PDF is fine — I upload them to ChatGPT all the time.”

And you’re right: AI agents can read pieces of text from a PDF. But that is very different from understanding an FDD like humans do.

AI struggles with exactly the parts of an FDD that matter the most:

  • It can’t reliably interpret tables in Items 7, 19, or 20
  • It can’t recognize relationships between items
  • It misreads visual layout and formatting
  • Small inconsistencies break its ability to extract meaning
  • Has the tendency to fill in the gaps by guessing

AI agents can interpret some text, but they cannot perceive internal FDD logic without a formal structure. An ontology provides the rules, constraints, and relationships that anchor correct understanding of an FDD. Guarded with an ontology, AI is far less likely to hallucinate, misinterpret data, or generate answers that aren’t supported by reality.

Google operationalized this idea for the public web with Schema.org — a shared vocabulary that helps search engines understand entities, relationships, and meaning across the internet.

Franchising has its own ontology called FDDSchema.org, a standardized semantic layer for items and exhibits of an FDD. It gives AI the grounding it needs to understand not just the text of an FDD, but its true structure and meaning.

In an AI-driven world, data richness matters far more than ranking. AI agents can parse through dozens of sites quickly, so finding the correct information is more important than being the first one.
